Activists from a group calling itself 'Pie in the Sky' part of the Rising Tide UK network (www.risingtide.org.uk *) today strolled into and disrupted a top-level conference on the new market in trading carbon dioxide emissions. The conference, titled 'Emissions Trading Schemes Objectives, Implementation and Future Opportunities', was being held at London's Kensington Palace Hotel.

CAMPAIGN AGAINST CARBON TRADING
In its Political Statement, Rising Tide says that it opposes emissions trading, carbon sinks, Clean Development Mechanism, Joint Implementation and other false solutions being used as a way to escape responsibility for reductions.

Climate Change recognized as a problem by governments. This led to UN Framework Convention on Climate Change 1992. Aim was to stabilize emissions of greenhouse gases.
Governments realised that the convention alone, without binding targets was unable to achieve that goal. After years of negotiations, governments adopted the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, which set out to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in over-developed (=industrialised) countries by 5.2% (compared to 1990 emission levels).

CARBON TRADING CONFERENCE STOPPED…FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS!
Today in Amsterdam at 9.30am, a conference designed to inform and educate would-be carbon traders was stormed by local climate activists. The opening session, where BP's Head of Climate Change Mark Akhurst was speaking, was interrupted as activists danced into the room in bright blue wigs, blowing horns and whistles and storming the stage. The activists shouted messages like "Trading in pollution is not a solution" and threw carbon credits to bewildered conference participants.

We hear a lot about how great the Kyoto Protocol is- and how desperately important it is that the Protocol is implemented. Here's the real arguments why it's important and why it's pants.
THE KYOTO PROTOCOL IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE....
In May and June 2001, the Rising Tide Climate Chaos Tour visited 12 cities in Britain. Some 300 people came to the Tour. In the last session of each gig people broke into small groups and brainstormed ideas for action. This is a list taken from their ideas.
This list proves that no one can argue that there’s nothing we can do about climate change. Our only problem now is choosing what to do- and when has that ever been an excuse for not doing anything?!
